My golfing partner Mike mentioned the Optimist’s Chicken dinner and we’re glad he did. Not only was the dinner delicious, but the barbecue operation was something to see. 

Lapeer Chicken Grill Master

The grill was custom built and held almost 3000 bags of charcoal by day’s end. Basically, the grill is about 75 feet long, 3 feet wide and 3 feet tall. They place the chicken on a metal grate, pictured at right. As the chicken cooks they move it down the grill until it gets plated.

A whole half a chicken plus sides and a drink for $9 is not only a great deal, but apart from the costs of food and charcoal the proceeds all go to help Lapeer youth. It’s great to see people in a community like Lapeer come together, have fun and raise money for local kids. Nice job by the optimist’s club of Lapeer. Volunteers working to help their community. Nice.
